Waioli Stream Bridge
In April of 2018, heavy rains on Kauai caused substantial damage along Kuhio Highway, Route 560 in Wainiha. Heavy equipment needed to clean and repair the roadway had to be transported across Waioli Stream Bridge. This structure, which was built in 1912, was rated for only eight tons. Hence, KSF, Inc. provided the plans to increase the capacity of Waioli Stream Bridge.
Preserving the historic character of this bridge was a priority. Thus, we detailed an externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer system on the upturned girders as well as the soffit of the deck to increase the capacity of the bridge. Colored Very Early Strength Latex Modified Concrete topping was also installed to strengthen the bridge deck. These measures allowed the heavy equipment to be safely transported across the bridge while maintaining the original color and appearance of the existing structure.
